Blue Oyster Cult's Spectres album from 1977 has always been one of my favorite albums by the band. Having already been a fan of F.W. Murnau's classic 1922 fan Nosferatu when the album was released, each time I heard this song, "Nosferatu", images from that film were playing in my head. It's a really cool and beautiful song....by a band that wrote many, many cool and beautiful songs.

This isn't the first time that the movie has been used as a video for the song, and it probably won't be the last, as anyone familiar with both the film and song has, like myself and others, had the film playing in their mind everytime they hear this song. My version is simply my vision...and I hope you like it.

[Lyrics]

Deep in the heart of germany

Lucy clutched her breast in fear

She heard a beat of her lover's heart

For weeks she raved in dreams he appeared

From far off transylvania

Only a woman can break his spell

Pure in heart who will offer herself

To nosferatu

This ship pulled in without a sound

The faithful captain long since cold

He kept his log till the bloody end

Last entry read "rats in the hold.

My crew is dead - I fear the plague"

Only a woman can break his spell

Pure in heart who will offer herself

Mortal terror reigned

Sickness now then horrible death

Only lucy knew the truth

And at her window

Nosferatu

So chaste, so calm, she gave herself

To the pleasure of the dreaded master

He sucked the precious drops of life

Throughout the long and cold dark night

One last goodbye, he was blinded by love

One last goodbye, he was blinded by love

Blinded by love

He screamed with fear, he'd stayed too long in her room

The morning sun had come too soon

The spell was broken with a kiss of doom

He vanished into dust, left her all alone

Only a woman can break his spell

Pure in heart, who will offer herself

Only a woman can break his spell

Pure in heart who will offer herself

To nosferatu

I am a french fan of BÖC, I love this video . I only knew Werner Herzog's film with Isabelle Adjani & Klaus Kinski. I do not think I would stand watching Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau's movie entirely ! But you made a great video editing work, with brown/blue/red colors... & repeated pictures that fit perfectly to the music ! Murnau should thank you from his grave ! Fantastique !

Agents of Fortune was a tough act to follow for BOC. Spectres was very different stylistically, but is still one of my favorite Cult albums. "Nosferatu", along with "I Love the Night", are two of my favorite songs off the album. Very moody and atmospheric. Nice job blending the classic film with the song. You can clearly see their inspiration.

@steverid I remember that radio program as well.....yeah, it was super scary too! Pretty cool to think about that after so many years....you know, it just goes to show that no movie can be scarier than the one we play in our mind listening to/or reading a scary story....and that truly scary music helped too.....what was it like all bass clarinet? Would be really fun to hear some of those again...may need to google and see what pops up. Thanks for reminding me about that program!

@MetalGuruMessiah Yep...the nightmare you had is the same fearful scene that runs through my mind as well.....Him rising out of that stinkin' coffin like that. Super freaky! My brother & I used to listen to this scary radio program while we were in bed at night. It was hosted by E.G. Marshall. I forget the name but all of those shows were pretty scary as well. Those flying monkeys didn't do anything positive for me either. I'll just stay out of the basement...lol!

@steverid Wow....dude, Nosferatu at 8? And I thought those monkeys from WOZ were scary? I would have been truly terrified if I'd see it that young. Damn, I gotta hand it to you for making through childhood! LOL! I had a nightmare years ago that involved Nosferatu and his coffin...carrying it around and rising strait out of it like he did in the film..freaking scary. I'm glad you found the vid so you could hear this awesome song. In my book, few bands could touch BOC in their prime. Thanks!

I remember seeing Nosferatu for the 1st time when I was about 8 or so....it scared the crap out of my brother & I. To this day I find it hard to go into my basement for fear of seeing him or any of the zombies from the original "Night of the Living Dead". Stupid, I know. I've never heard this song by BOC either...it is beautiful. Thank you for posting this. Take care, Steve
