I'm the light is the sixth track from Blue Cheer's sixth, and last album until 1983, Oh! Pleasant Hope. It was released in 1971 and features less psychadelia and more blues-rock & hard rock. This is an unusual Blue Cheer album in that Dickie Peterson only sings lead on three songs. Another unusual aspect is that the song "I'm the Light" features extensive use of the sitar and synthesizer, although on the previous album The Original Human Being the song "Babaji (Twilight Raga)" also featured extensive use of the aforementioned instruments.

This song is also included on their compilation Good Times Are So Hard To Find, released in 1990.

I have the original vinyl too. Who can deny the epic psychedelic quality of this track? If you think you're qualified, you just ain't gittin' it.

Actually there are two Indian instruments played on this track. One is the Sitar with the Tanpura and the other is a Dilruba which is a string instruments played with a bow and is played by Norman Mayell. Of all the music that was created in the 60's and the 70's by Jimmy Page, The Rolling Stones and the Beatles this track captures the true fusion of the sound of Indian instruments. Listening to this music for the last 40+ years and never get tired of it.

YouTube sidebar gave me this. Just came up. Was listening to Follow Me by the Californians and looking at Google Earth. I was 3 in 1971. I'll die loving the music of my early years.

I'm hearing this for the first time. They tried all sorts of stuff that I'm finally catching up with. Some of it is down right interesting and a nice little treasure to find. Thank you for putting this up.

Who is playing the sitar? Wonderful song and maybe one of GFR's best.

All the comments below. I did not read to see if any stated the common knowledge that their first LP is credited as the first Heavy Metal LP ever. Yes they constantly evolved and changed members. I think this last Phillips LP was their Best !

No one's laughing , here , though I guess I never compared them to any British group , even the ones that influenced them , in my mind. When I got turned on to the first two LPs , I wanted MORE , tho' I'd heard about the changes....I'd just seen the "Human Be-In" film , not knowing their track was from 1967. I also thought Holden stayed with them , longer. But , I bought all their albums , found myself enjoying them on different levels.

@notfragile33 That's certainly debatable!

@pfordsq I didn't know alot of that history (thanks!), and in retrospect it makes sense to me now. Lotsa my peers at the time were divided about this seminal S.F. R&R band, many losing interest when the 'heavy metal' thing changed. Now don't get me wrong, I've always been big-time into 'hard rock', but BC was diff'rent = I wuz into every album! The sitar, the country thing, the electronics. Don't laugh at me, but I've always likened them to an Amerikan Pink Floyd.
