I think the most ominous line in this very ominous song is "He picked up the shovel and he made the grin." That the narrator obviously knows the look of somebody about to kill a man. THE grin. Not just a grin. He knows that look from both sides.

Some say this guy is a dead man brought back to life. I'm not sure it's about anything. That's how folk songs work. But imagine being told only the truth. "You'll never see your daughter again" "the cancer is inoperable" "that was the last time you'll ever make love". Think about knowing only truth, having nothing to hope for your whole life.Truth is something a lot of people are sorry to know and are grateful for not knowing. But the truth about truth is a terrible jest; it's a bad joke.

What is this song actually about? The lyrics don't really make sense, it must have a meaning behind them

You boys are good! Get the hell out of the cesspool called Portland. You belong in Austin or Nashville. Unless you like hanging out in Portland. Then you lose!

The line "She fed me words that I could not taste, for I had no tongue it had been replaced" refers to the incantations that she uses in the creation of his body. Having been dead his mortal memories are scant if at all, he has to relearn everything; "the neighbor girl taught me how to spell, and how to steal what I could not sell." In the end, he cannot escape the dark magic used for his resurrection; "but I fed my tongue on the devil's rum (violence)" and kills the necromancer.

My current interpretation: Grace is a bruja/necromancer who resurrects the protagonist from the grave ("she found me down in a lonely place"), using a jaw bone that possesses dark magic which is later alluded to in the line "in a roadhouse run by a godless bone." She recreates his body using his flower of a tongue as its life force ("she dressed me up for to take me home") but having seen the ultimate Truth that only the dead can know, and mortals cannot live whilst knowing, his "words" kill.
