Billy Joe "B. J." Thomas (born August 7, 1942, Hugo, Oklahoma) is an American popular singer known for his chart-topping hits in the 1960s and 1970s.

Lyrics:

THIS IS THE STORY ABOUT BILLY AND SUE

THEY WERE AS IN LOVE AS WERE ANY TWO

AND THEN BILLY HAD TO DIE

AND WHEN YOU HEAR THE REASON WHY

YOU´LL HANG YOUR HEAD AND CRY

BILLY AND SUE MET THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

AND EVER SINCE LIVED BY THE GOLDEN RULE

BECAUSE WHEN YOU DO UNTO OTHERS

WHAT YOU WOULD´NT WANT DONE TO YOU

YOU´D HAVE TO BE A FOOL

THIS MUTUAL AGREEMENT OF LOVE AND TRUST

MADE THEM TRAVEL THE ROAD TO MARRIAGE OR BUST

AND WHEN BILLY WAS OLD ENOUGH TO TAKE A WIFE

HE WAS OLD ENOUGH TO FIGHT FOR HIS COUNTRY---

AND HIS WAY OF LIFE

SUES LETTERS CAME EVERY DAY

STRENGHTENED HIS CAUSE THEY SHOWED HIM THE WAY

TO FIGHT FOR HIS COUNTRY AND THE GIRL HE LOVED

THATS A SOLDIERS ONLY PAY

BUT THEN BILLY HEARD NO MORE FROM SUE

HE WAS WORRIED SICK BUT WHAT COULD HE DO

THE BULLETS WERE SCREAMING AS HE HUGGED THE GROUND

AND BACK HOME SUE WAS RUNNIN ROUND

BILLY WAS GETTIN LESS AND LESS STRONG

HIS HOPE HIS FAITH WAS ALMOST GONE

AND THEN LIKE A MIRACLE THE LETTER APPEARED

BILLY TORE THE LETTER OPEN AND HE READ

"DEAR JOHN"

A LOOK CAME OVER BILLY THAT WOULD SCARE A GHOST

OF A MILLION LOOK SINGLE SOLDIERS -- COAST TO COAST

AND EVEN THOUGH THE AIR WAS FILLED WITH LEAD

BILLY JUMPED UP THEY SHOT HIM DEAD

BILLY WAS BURIED IN A FAR AWAY GRAVE

IT READ FOR HIS COUNTRY HIS LIFE HE GAVE

BUT THAT EPITAPH WAS ONLY A PART

HE DIDNT DIE FROM A BULLET BUT HE DIED FROM A BROKEN HEART

one of the saddest songs ever written..and if your in camp seeing someone receive one of these dear john letters especially someone who loves that person faithfully you can see how cold that is and how much it sucks the life out of them...sad..sad sad. wait till they get home to tell them..be woman enough to do that

On a run of war-ies...sang this for Music at Deception Bay State School circa 1966...was given a hard time for it being anti-war but wth...got me my first kiss from the beautiful Heather...five years later sat down in a moratorium march in Queen Street and got my first Kick in the ass from a Qld Copper...was working for the Sunday Truth and one of the journos hauled me away from a jail sentence...funny thing is they "recruited me" nearly a quarter century later nearly 20 years since then,,,

One of his many great hits. Thanks BJ Thomas for being there for so many in the 60's. You will have your earned place in the RRHOF someday.

I remember this song from waaay back when. I learned how to play guitar just so I could play this song! I haven't heard it in years but could still sing it word for word. I always hated Sue so much!!!

Why is'nt BJ in the R&R hall of Fame?? This song by itself is an anthem to the foolishness of our foreign policy then and now. Bring Back the Time is probably the most underated song of the legend known as Billy Joe Thomas. Is he Robin Gibb, no but very close behind.
