Has anyone other than I speculated that Bix Beiderbecke's tragic early death may have been linked to a bipolar mood condition? His brilliant but sorrowful life trajectory fits such an affliction: Superior intelligence, driven to achieve, bursts of boundless energy, early and consistentent success, early and heavy use of alcohol to relieve symptoms (yes, mood swings hurt), "confirmed" addiction by early adulthood, erratic behavior, individualistic in the extreme, untimely death. (Heavy booze really beats up a body) I've noted this condition running in families, not least of all families of German extraction. If so, this does not render Bix's early death less tragic, but rather more tragic in the classic sense. Life with bipolar mood swings is difficult. If so, this elevates admiration for what Bix achieved in and for his time.
