This song reminds of my fucking ass crazy Grandma Julie trapping us inside a retirement, and calls every so many just annoy us. I just keep letting telephone ring until the answering machine picks up, and she keeps calling until we pick up the phone just to hang it back up. Grandma will never talk to me like an adult, and it makes me feel like a fucking ass fool. Grandma keeps causing fights between my Dad and I over things.

In light of the fact that Roslyn Joel is now deceased, the truth can be revealed that this song was written about Billy Joel's mother. The speculation is that she met the criteria for both Alcohol Dependence, a gene that was passed along to Billy, and Borderline Personality Disorder. The combination of a very difficult personality coupled with the inevitable "drink and dial" in the middle of the night would have precipitated the lyric: "Here I am feeling like a fucking fool!" I still love this song for its Beatles influence with the "oh, woah, woah" chorus being derived from "Strawberry Fields Forever."
