Το 1931, οι μεταλλωρύχοι της πόλης Χάρλαν, κατεβαίνουν σε απεργία. Οπλισμένοι χαφιέδες της ιδιοκτητών των ορυχείων οργώνουν την επαρχία, τρομοκρατώντας τα μέλη του σωματείου μεταλλωρύχων, ενώ στρέφουν το μίσος τους ιδιαίτερα ενάντια στους ηγέτες του κινήματος, τους οποίους και ξυλοφορτώνουν, φυλακίζουν αλλά και δολοφονούν.Παρά την εργοδοτική τρομοκρατία, οι μεταλλωρύχοι παρουσιάζονται αποφασισμένοι και συνεχίζουν την απεργία, ενώ απαντούν με άγριες συγκρούσεις με τους μπράβους και τους χαφιέδες.Η κυρία Ρις στην οποία αποδίδονται οι στίχοι του “which side are you on” δεν έγραψε “αποστασιοποιημένη” τα λόγια αυτά. Ο άντρας της, ο Σαμ, ήταν ένας από τους ηγέτες του σωματείου.Ο σερίφης του Χάρλαν J. H. Blair, ο οποίος απολαμβάνει ιδιαίτερης αναφοράς στο τραγούδι, μπήκε μαζί με τους άντρες του στο σπίτι της Ρις, ένα από τα βράδιατης απεργίας, ψάχνοντας για τον άντρα της, όταν αυτή ήταν μόνη της με τα 7 παιδιά της. Έκαναν το σπίτι άνω-κάτω, ενώ όταν επιτέλους κατάλαβαν πως ο Σαμ δεν βρίσκεται κρυμμένος κάπου στο σπίτι, του έστησαν ενέδρα, περιμένοντάς τον να γυρίσειΗ κυρία Ρις, όσο οι άντρες του σερίφη περίμεναν τον άντρα της, έσκισε ένα χαρτί από το ημερολόγιο τοίχου που διατηρούσε και έγραψε στην λευκή του πλευρά τους στίχους του “Which side are you on”. Το τραγούδι διαδόθηκε πολύ γρήγορα και από εκεί και πέρα, δεν υπήρχε απεργία στην οποία δεν υιοθετήθηκε…
