The original and best version, that's for sure. Simple and effective. I don't think anyone needs to read any particular message from it, it's a nice, fun tale of imagination, a choir full of animals, beautiful!

I have long called this song 'the gospel according to Makem and Clancey', because of it's message of equality and inclusiveness. Everyone belongs, and everyone has a role to play in this world to help make it a better place for all. to the best of their individual abilities. This is one of my all-time favourite songs.I didn't know until a day or two ago that it was written by Bill Staines.... now I know.

Great song, great voice, great guitar. Just terrific. Thanks. I played this at children's concert and they walked around the rest of the day singing the chorus. Mike

Have heard the Porcupine story at Bill Staines concerts before, but that's just part of Bill's charm. Get a chance, go see this well seasoned performer at least once. The first might be the best, but the rest ain't bad either.
