John, Cosby's version wasn't until May 1970, so you couldn't have heard it in 1966, unless it was by a different artist.

I grew up in a military family. I remember hearing this song back in the late 60s or so. Over the years, I have asked others about this song. I find it incredible that many people have not heard this. I think that everyone should hear it and remember those who are away from home and working to keep us safe and free.

As a returning combat vet, and retired military, I can tell you that I have times where I feel forgotten too. What the world doesn't see, is some of us may look likes ducks on water, all smooth on top of the water, but underneath, we're constantly having to work our hardest just to keep ourselves afloat.

Came back to a strange place in 1970 (Travis AFB with the drug dogs sniffing us) from there, still resonates. Before they invented PTSD. Good luck to your generations, my children wonderful and Mr. Cosby an icon

I was in the 6th grade in '66 when I heard this song on my crystal radio, heard it one time. hadn't heard it again till now. I cried when i heard it then. I hadn't realized just what war was till then. Not the killing part, but the loneliness, and heartache of it all. Crosby, aside from his humor, really had a knack for putting one in that place of actualization. A place of empathy. that's what makes him a great storyteller. it's also what makes him a great person. Thanks Bill

It was during the Viet Nam War. I just thought he was trying to remind us about the soldiers "out there". Not a big soapbox for such an absolute GIANT! He may be funny, but war ain't. Please don't forget our troops. They are still "out there". Never to be forgotten.

You're already dead, so go away.

what the hell. it's like a soundtrack to a western movie with Cosby talking to himself and even sneaking a "yo mamma" joke in there. If you call this singing, I need to drill a hole in your head so you can hear.

I remember this song and I was trying to find it about a year ago. It kind of rests in that gray area between poignant and corny. Thanks for posting.
