I think that this song was originally written by Rudy Martinez (aka "?"), circa 1962 in Bay City, Michigan and first released on obscure Pa-Go-Go label, picked up by Cameo Records for national distribution and in 1966 peaking at #22 on Billboard hot 100. Big Maybelle, recorded this in her 1967 album, "America's Queen Mother of Soul: Got a Brand New Bag." Both Aretha Franklin and Jimmy Ruffin did a very soulful renditions of this song. Some soul greats did wonders with bubblegum (eg. Wilson PIckett and "Sugar Sugar"), but I think Big Maybelle's the only one who tackled garage band classics. This and "Black is Black"... crazy perfection!
