When Big Country took to the stage at the Grugahalle in Essen in March 1986 they were at the peak of their commercial success on the back of their No.1 UK album Steeltown and the release of their follow up The Seer (Which would go to No.2) a few months in the future. Founded by the late Stuart Adamson on his departure from The Skids, Big Country would go on to have a lengthy career extending well into the nineties but they can have delivered few finer performances than this legendary Rockpalast appearance.

Tracklisting:

1) Wonderland 2) Fields Of Fire 3) Where The Rose Is Sown 4) Rain Dance 5) Remembrance Day 6) Just A Shadow 7) Steeltown 8) Look Away 9) Chance 10) The Teacher 11) In A Big Country 12) Inwards 13) Harvest Home 14) The Storm 15) Lost Patrol 16) Tracks Of My Tears

I've never seen you look like this without a reason,

Another promise fallen through, another season passes by you.

I never took the smile away from anybody's face,

And that's a desperate way to look for someone who is still a child.

CHORUS:

And in a big country, dreams stay with you,

Like a lover's voice, fires the mountainside..

Stay alive..

(I thought that pain and truth were things that really mattered

But you can't stay here with every single hope you had shattered)

I'm not expecting to grow flowers in the desert,

But I can live and breathe and see the sun in wintertime..

CHORUS [x2]

So take that look out of here, it doesn't fit you.

Because it's happened doesn't mean you've been discarded.

Pull up your head off the floor, come up screaming.

Cry out for everything you ever might have wanted.

I thought that pain and truth were things that really mattered

But you can't stay here with every single hope you had shattered.

I'm not expecting to grow flowers in the desert,

But I can live and breathe and see the sun in wintertime..

CHORUS [x3]

Wishing you a wonderful birthday!Stuart Adamson / Big Country - In A Big CountryWilliam Stuart Adamson (11 April 1958 – 16 December 2001) was a Scottish guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter, described by broadcaster and DJ John Peel as “the new Jimi Hendrix”. He founded the Scottish art-punk band Skids and later the more mainstream rock group Big Country, as well as the 1990s alternative country rock act The Raphaels. He committed suicide in 2001.Big Country[edit]Adamson came to greater international prominence with Big Country. He constructed the band with friend and fellow-guitarist Bruce Watson (then employed as a cleaner on submarines at Rosyth naval base) and a rhythm section of well-established studio musicians Mark Brzezicki and Tony Butler, whom he found with the help of his record company. He founded the band in 1982, the same year his first child was born.Big Country's first hit, 1983's "Fields of Fire", reached the UK's Top Ten, and was rapidly followed by the album The Crossing. The album was a big crossover hit in the United States powered by the single "In a Big Country", which was performed on Saturday Night Live. The video for "In A Big Country" received frequent airplay on MTV & featured the band riding ATV's in the countryside.Their second album Steeltown appeared in 1984, and was again a success with both fans and critics, although not quite to the same heights as their debut. The band's third album was The Seer. The first two albums were produced by Steve Lillywhite. The band continued to record studio albums, and to tour until 1999. Adamson supplied much of the distinctive guitar work, as well as being lead singer and main songwriter (both music and lyrics). The band's lineup never really underwent changes, the exception being a brief departure of drummer Mark Brzezicki in the early 1990s and his replacement by Pat Ahern.Adamson was also a keen motorcyclist and regularly purchased new machines for riding around Fife. His interest extended to the race track where he sponsored British Championship rider Iain Duffus in the late eighties.wikipedia

I absolutely love this song and this is the only video I can find on it. This live performance was done a short while before he killed himself... The change is evident in the song and how he sings, making it lackluster and depressing. I'd love to see one of the original performances.
