plenty of music cognates (cousinry sounds/groups of sounds/common ancestor) in mountain bluegrass, scottish folk and creative revival bands such as big country.

Cack management and repertoire choices to reflect that. This song, however, was when SA obviously wanted to move on and work with other real songwriters than keep BC going.

This song is maybe the most underrated one of a brilliant band. I love Big Country from the very beginning and it's a hard job to carry on after a milestone like The Crossing. But BC kept their creativity as long as they played together. Birmingham is just a simple demo track but should have made it to Driving To Damascus for sure. Maybe a second chance for a mature version with Mike Peters and Jamie Watson?

I find it splendidly absurd that a Scottish band would do a song about Birmingham, AL, but coming from this neck of the woods myself, let me say that it's spot on. It captures that itching discomfort about being stuck in the woods and run down cities of Alabama, with nothing but the thunderstorms, a jar of whiskey, and a dubious lady for comfort.

Maybe I'm different but at anytime, anytime, day, or, night, anytime, day or night Big Country catches my whole attention. (Maybe thats why I got fired once ha ha).

I've been having a crappy day, meaning I've been kinda down in the dumps for the whole stinking day. But then I started listening BC songs and when this came up... I first thought I bursted in tears, but after a few seconds I realized I was actually laughing. This is exactly why I love Big Country from here to eternity.

My Spidey Sense is telling me Stuart had a particular lady in mind when he wrote this.....not to name names, mind you!

I've felt like that-what the song describes. Then when u get home,ur wiped out 4days!The healthcare inaction n US makes me feel that way too! I'm stuck w/spineless politicians like blue dog craps down n Birmingham n the stormy weather,I'm just waiting 4the clouds 2blow,4the rains 2go.Feels like forever! I'm stuck here w/heartless,sell-out $grubbing wingnuts like u down n Birmingham&the storm is a raging, I'm just watching while the clouds explode, staying on the road While U watch me AGING!

Oh I agree with you about Birmingham being about gold diggers, absolutely. We must have got out wires crossed, sorry, I was referring to 'Song Of The South' being about South Africa, not Birmingham :-) Consummate has a sexual context of course, but is also a word to describe something being of the highest professionalism too. I think it's great the way his words here can be taken both ways, very clever writing :-)

Song Of The South was about South Africa and apartheid :-)
