I was a representative of a polish trade union in a corporation. This song reminds me of how important it is to have a friend which helps you through bad times in any kind of job and how consumption and management brainwash drives people to forget the basics of human solidarity. @LURIG81 I know someone who works as a security guard at the Palace of Westminster. He can't afford descent housing in London so pay's most of his wage in rent outside the London area. He had become friendly with a peer who was one of Thatcher's Govt. He asked this peer why council houses were sold off so cheaply, leaving people like him in such a situation. The response was "My dear boy, social engineering! People with mortgages can't go on strike"

Thanks Tim Davies. That's a great photo montage that really helps to illustrate what this great song's about, and about the best endeavours of our grandparents. Maybe we should start a petition to get it played at the finale of the last night of the Proms. At least it would restore some "balance" to the usual jingoism of Land of Hope and Glory and Rule Britannia. After achieving that modest objective: National Anthem!

I'm 15 and I think this song is wonderful and has as much relevance today as it did in the 80's. I can't explain how much respect I have for the majority of working men and women at that time, and of course Billy Bragg.
