Track 2 on the Ben Folds Five Album 'The Sound of the Life of the Mind'.

This album is due to be released on the 18th September 2012.

Lyrics-

It was the opposite of 'Fire and Rain'

You know the song

I never thought I'd see this guy again

But I was wrong

Oh, every five years

Since 1972 when at recess

He recruited me to try to kick

The church down to the ground

Michael Praytor

So random

Who knows why some satellites

Come by and by

While others disappear

Into the sky

Good morning, mirror

Break the change to me

I tried to stay too close to see

That there's a pattern in the tiles

And a fool who marks the miles

It was long hair

And this time it was no hair

Seeming thin, divorced, inspired

Engaged in chemo, born again and fired

Michael Praytor

So random

Who knows why some satellites

Come by and by

While others disappear

Into the sky

Disappear into the sky

Hey

At Hanes Mall parking lot at 5am

I saw him sleeping in his car

I've been up all night from New York

Bumming out on 95

Now I'm 30 and we all live with our parents

"And my wife," he said, "she kicked me out"

I said, same here

Guess I'll see you 'round

(I'll see you around)

Guess I'll see you 'round

(I'll see you around)

Michael Praytor

So random

Who knows why some satellites

Come by and then they disappear

The speaker of this lyrical composition elevates the impulsive Michael Praytor to the luminary status of the Moon's regularity but following progressive encounters demotes him to a Comet Halley standing.I'm only saying: I like this song.

God damn do I love this song right now. How is this album not nominated for a Grammy??? (besides the fact that the Grammys are a sham and not an accurate gauge of how good an artist/album is.... ....I answered my own question)

I absolutely love the harmony when it says "sky." Such an amazing song.

Same here, I thought it was "My cold, grey hair" the first 10 times or so I heard the song.

I love the parts "a fool who marks the miles" and bumming out on 95 where they bring the harmonies in. Love it! Glad to see these dudes back at it!

Nice observation - this song does have a ELO feel to it. And this is a good thing.

Listened to the album on loop in my car for 2 days. Didnt know the song titles or lyrics. Seeing the lyrics just makes it even better! Had know idea they were singing Michael Praytor. Ha ha. God bless those goofy bastards. Classic Ben Folds Five.

Clarification: Just because they're deep and philosophical doesn't mean they're not relatable. I redact my previous "welcome surprise" bit. lol Completely agree with you.

Robert and Darren, how I've missed you.

Interesting you feel that way, and the relatability of lyrics is very subjective, but I feel that I relate to the lyrics of Ben Folds more than any other artist I've come across...from Jackson Cannery to Michael Prayter and everything in between.
