The recording by Guy Lombardo's orchestra was recorded on April 20, 1945, and it was released by Decca Records as catalog number 18683, with the flip side "Oh, Brother!". It first reached the Billboard magazine Best Seller chart on June 14, 1945 and lasted 10 weeks on the chart, peaking at #6.

Once there was a little girl who lived next to me

And she loved a sailor boy, he was only three

Now he's on a battleship in his sailor suit

Just a great big sailor but she thinks he's very cute

(With his bell bottom trousers, coat of navy blue

She loves her sailor and he loves her too)

When her sailor boy's away on the ocean blue

Soldier boys all flirt with her but to him she's true

Though they smile and tip their caps and they wink their eyes

She just smiles and shakes her head, then she softly sighs

(Oh, bell bottom trousers, coat of navy blue

She loves her sailor and he loves her too)

When her sailor went to sea to see what he could see

She saw that he ate spinach, now he's big as he can be

When he's home they stroll along, they don't give a hoot

She won't let go of his hand, even to salute

If her sailor she can't find on the bounding main

She is hopeful he will soon come home safe again

So they can get married and raise a family

Dress up all their kiddies in sailor's dungarees

(Oh, bell bottom trousers, coat of navy blue

She loves her sailor and he loves her too)

I remember it well. I was a sailor in the U. S. Navy in World War II. A Pharmacist's Mate 3rd and 2nd class stationed at Naval Air Stations in California. After the war I sailed to Bikini, Marshall Islands for Operation Crossroads, A-Bomb tests then to China and Japan.

My dad used to sing this to me when I was little. He was a sailor in WWII, stationed in California. A salute to you, Daddy!

This song brings back many memories of 1941 to 1945 WW2 when I was only 10 years old & one of my school buddies DAD use to bring home big cartons from the shoe factory, and we would cut them up put them side by side, and play Sailors on Ships. We had quite an imagination,NO TV,s to watch,so we played outside a lot.I served 9 years in the NAVY,1952 to 1961.MY AKA was" FRENCHY " On board the VULCAN AR 5 ,Then to Corpus Christie Tex.Then the West Coast on board the KEARSARGE CVS 33.THE best (9 years of my Life) Now living the rest of my Life ,here in FLORIDA.A Preacher still going "BOSTON STRONG" THANKS BUDDIES> GBY

I never knew their story. I was in active from 1984-1996m NavRes(97-99). I just read it since I was curious about the picture and came across your comment. I noticed they were wearing the flat hats. They were in during WWII. I noticed a little boy in the picture before had a white flat hat. I don't know why the Navy did away with that cover. I thought it looked better than the Dixie Cup. Many of the European Countries still wore flat hats when I was in. What was the last year for that cover?

Navy Vet here....anybody know who made the version that had the line,,,"Daddy was a Sailor, I'm a Sailor too". My Navy Dad had me in a Sailor suit when I was 3 yrs old. Had a Bosun pipe hanging from my neck lanyard. (1944) Joined Navy at 17 (1959), was a Fireman Apprentice. Wanted a ship, got an Air Station. Wound up an Airdale.

Those are indeed the five Sullivan brothers who died during the sinking of the USS Juneau. Their deaths resulted in a policy change that prohibited brothers being assigned to the same command. The Navy named a Guided Missile Destroyer, USS The Sullivans in their honor. Fair winds and following seas to you,

You are so right UP58. I used to have Louis Prima 78 record years ago.Would Love to hear the tune again by him,ex Navy ww2 vet. Tony Pastor had a good one also.

These clean lyrics are by Moe Jaffe. This version was recorded about the same time by Kay Kyser and Tony Pastor. All versions, as well as those by Louis Prima and Jerry Colonna reached the top ten of Billboard's Best Seller chart within a few months.
