It's not cocaine. It's really a C-A-F-F-E-I-N-E rush ;)

@VisionaryCompanion And is that supposed to be a bad thing? H&O seem to always put on amazing performances, no matter what. Who cares if someone was using back then, at lease their not doing it now.

@drfulmore07 Same here! I was just thinking that too.

@VisionaryCompanion G.E. is awesome! I actually have his first solo album. That's a great song!

As a former rock musician who was involved in the music scene in the late seventies and early eighties, I can say with absolute certainty that this performance has C-O-C-A-I-N-E written all over it in giant capital letters. (I came across this video because of my fondness for G.E. Smith, who is immensely likeable, both as a musician and as a person. I was in a band that did a cover of "Heart Frozen Up," off of his first solo album.)

I remember me and a group of friends from Bergstrom AFB in Austin went to see H&O on this tour. I got right up to the stage at the Armadillo with Max McGee, beneath where GE was standing. We didn't know him from Adam, but thought "WOW! Who IS this guy?!" It wasn't only his stellar chops, it was his stage presence and all those wild facial contortions! Great times. (And to this day, I'm convinced Max was personally responsible for getting us that third encore!)

Sounds like they're really pandering to the times here. No wonder this was not a hit....

I was at that gig! I was playing bass with the opening act for part of that tour, and got to see the guys from backstage night after night. I still don't think DH ever got the props he should as a singer.

I saw them in early '79 and I remember G.E. Smith looked sooo unusual (for the times!) with the crew cut and shirt and tie. It was brilliant because he left that memory with me vividly for 30 years!!!

I'll say, the songs where Oats got to sing lead vocals are always great.

Holy shit, I've never heard Hall and Oates like this.

It is a kick ass song, but think Alley Katz was probably a little heavier rock song. Also NYCNY on Daryl's solo Sacred Songs is up there too. Along the Red Ledge and X-static are fantastic albums and were ahead of their time. Definitely worth getting for anyone who doesn't have them.

For the record, I was actually a big Hall-n-Oats fan in the 80's. I'm glad you got my joke...ha ha.. But he does look like him.

Is that Freddie Mercury with the dark hair?

these guys really suck, they have no clue what be-bop even is. WTF are they talking about. These are technically incapable of even playing bebop music.
