Although popularly believed to be about the wonderful drug LSD (a very powerful psychedelic, for those who don't know), it is confirmed by Lennon (who partook in the majority of the songs lyrics and format) and McCartney (and Lennon's son) that it was inspired by a painting of Lennon's son that reminded John of the Wool and Water chapter of Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll, where Alice is on a boat looking into the sky ("Picture yourself in a boat on the river"). When reading the lyrics with that knowledge in mind this becomes very apparent. However, with the number of rumors and speculations that parts of Alice in Wonderland (if not the entire story) was inspired by drugs such as mushrooms or acid, it's hard to tell if that's the overlying purpose after all.Either way, I'm high as shit and this video is amazing, even moreso on shrooms or acid.
