Beat The Clock - The McCoys [Union City, Indiana] - 1966 - "Good first impression on this pop gem with some nice jazzy guitar riffs halfway through. Their longest song with possibilities." - Hang On Sloopy: The Best Of The McCoys (Epic/Legacy)-1995.
I'm giving this compilation a rating of 3.4 stars (#stars/#tracks).
YES it has all their hits from the mid 60's, but there are some forgettable songs that lower it's rating. :-(
BIOGRAPHY excerpt by Bruce Eder (allmusic):
"It seems like Rick Derringer (Lead vocals, and lead guitar) has been on the rock & roll scene forever -- actually, it's only been since 1965, which makes him one of the more enduring veterans of his generation. Derringer's work with his band the McCoys in his midteens, highlighted by the bubblegum anthem "Hang On Sloopy," gave him a claim to low-level rock & roll immortality, and his subsequent playing with Johnny (and later Edgar) Winter provided him with a degree of credibility that a lot of guitar players can only envy, especially after the release of the Edgar Winter live double album Roadwork. "
NOTE: I could only find the shorter 45rpm version on youtube and thought you would like to hear the longer album version.
Beat the clock. Try to make it stop
Before time can draw the line
And cut you down to her size
Beat the clock. Try to make it stop
Tell me how long will it take
Before you finally realize
That the carnival is over
And you've seen much better days
You have wasted too much time
Into many different plays
You deny the possibility
Of growing old
You are filled with false humility
You're much too bold
Beat the clock. Try to make it stop
Before time can draw the line
And cut you down to her size
Beat the clock. Try to make it stop
Tell me how long will it take
Before you finally realize
That you're in this game same as me
Although you think you're not
When you try to rise above it all
You get just what you got
It seems to me you're slipping
You seem slightly unnerved
When you finally see yourself
You get what you deserve
Beat the clock. Try to make it stop
Before time can draw the line
And cut you down to her size
Beat the clock. Try to make it stop
Tell me how long will it take
Before you finally realize
That the carnival is over
And you've seen much better days
You have wasted too much time
Into many different plays
You deny the possibility
Of growing old
You are filled with false humility
You're much too bold
