It's hard to top Barbra singing anything. She's simply the best.

Sitting here with my hubby's sweater on, feeling warm and can still smell his cologne. He died in Sept.

I imagine a closeted drag queen or transvestite in 1978 when this came out being like "Awww yeah, dats my jam!"

I like Elkie for a romantic setting but Streisand sets this song afire for another setting...like appreciating true vocal talent.

Elkie Brooks gave this song a real blues feel. Streisand makes it M.O.R. Elkie for me.

Nope. Heard Elkie's version twice just to be sure. Streisand, clearly, recorded this because she knew it could be better. And so it is.

That clearly depends on whether you like full orchestra recordings in a sound studio or the basement sound. Elkie could never do what Barbra did here, no matter how "produced". However, Barbra could do the basement version with one take. Just listen to her latest release of Randy Newman's "I think it's going to rain today" and you have the real depth of what that woman can do with her voice...with nothing but a piano.

You poor sod. I've been helping women undress to Elkie for 35yrs. Cos it feeeeels so good. Honey honey. And yes, my clothes always look better on her. So play her the song, sit back and revere her. Damn--life is good! Elkie Brooks' album is "Two Days Away" from the '70s. Awesome.

Elkie did make it in her basement! The song comes from the basement, not the balcony. From the woman's engine room, raw naked honest vulnerable, reverant; a glimpse into the core guts of a woman. Polished and presented and lofty and uplifting as Babs is, is incongrous with the song and confusing and just plain wrong. Blood, sex, sweat, mud, shit, animal ;is what we're dealing with here. Who would call classy Babs for that job?

Agree with anniflannagan, much prefer Elkie Brooks' version from a year before. Remember reading an article which said Barbra objected the "smell" word , and as such copped two feels as opposed to one feel and one smell of the clothes in question! Big Streisand admirer, but Elkie's rawer, throatier and more pleading version tops this.

Damn I like Elkies version best. Streisand overcooks it.
