Barbara has a lovely, lyrical and tuneful voice and this song suited her perfectly.

Madonna is no Barbra Streisand, Lea Michele, etc. Moderate means somewhere in the middle, and I think that's a pretty accurate assessment. Still, her recordings are as good or better than plenty of people in the industry, and she does a fine job with this song in the movie. Also, if we want to remain factual....although she does at times lip synch (I think miming is a different art), she sings most of her concerts live. I've seen enough of them to say that if she was lip synching, she'd sound better. Still, most artists do lip synch and many do in concerts. Madonna is no better or worse than most. Moderate seems to fit.

That was the fashion at the time. Why do guys wear women's jeans (skinny jeans) now even though it looks fucking ridiculous?

Because it was a fashion statement to have one. Heck, I'm a blond guy and I had one. Must have a photo somewhere to prove it too. But I keep that away from the childrens eyes.

Yeah I prefer the singer on the American version...she sounds a bit younger and more frail...you know like the world has just run her over with a car. More fitting to the plot. Dickson is such a great singer...but it does sound like she'd kick the guy in the balls, not get sad.

While I love this song and lyrics, I just can't like this version, and get annoyed that it's the only version ever played on the radio. The lyrics demand vulnerability, subtlety, emotion - and the performance has nothing of this. Good, strong, loud voice, sure. But not the right one for this particular song.

@rljohio Even though the song isn't sung by Evita in the musical? Still, give Madge the good songs to sing even if it fucks with the plot.

This version probably feels more detached because it was in 1977 and music sounded different then. In reality this version is probably more accurate with the original vision of Tm and Andrew. But Madonna's version is more up to date and more accesible to younger audiences. It could have been anyone singing the film version and it would have been more appealing today.

She is a good singer, yeah but Madonna´s version is more coherent with the spirit of the musical. This one feels cold, detached...not as effective.
