If the 1980's were anything they were the rise and dominance of the girl groups, just as the early to mid 60's had been. Female vocalists in rock bands were already big since the mid 1970s with Fleetwood Mac, Heart, and Blondie, and also the solo acts like Linda Ronstadt, Olivia Newton-John, Patti Smith, Bonnie Raitt, Bonnie Tyler, Pat Benatar, Joan Jett, and others. It was The Go-Go's that saw the initial success of girl rock groups in 1981 by turning out a series of top 40 hits over the next several years. Ultimately, it was the US group The Bangles and the UK group Bananarama that defined the girl group sound of the 1980's and, to some extent, the 1990's, Bananarama producing more hit singles than any other all-female band of the decade. "I Heard A Rumour" as it turns out is my all time favorite Bananarama song, and possibly the best girl group song of the 80's. With this song, the all-female band sound reached a sophistication and glamour never before attained. "I Heard A Rumour" reached #4 on Billboard on September 26, 1987 and #4 on Cash Box on October 3 for two weeks. In the UK it charted at #14, and #2 in Canada.
