They're like the System of a Down of death metal...because they're like experimental death metal. (Yeah, I know it's called technical death metal but that's what I call it.)

+waratthewarfield did you read the interview with rings of saturn's ex-drummer? can't recall where it was but he revealed that rings of saturn record the guitar parts at half speed and double it on the albums, and that his drum tracks were so over produced that it was basically like a drum machine at the end

Well, let's be fair. Cryptopsy released one really, *really* shitty album in the form of The Unspoken King. Still doesn't excuse cherryorchards' ignorance.

It's funny how we all credit carcass for melodic death metal, but early tech death bands used just as much melody as heartwork(not a knock on heartwork). To me it seems like Atheist pioneered not only jazz-metal and Tech Death, but also Melodeath.

I actually have to agree with that guy, most modern tech death does just come across as pretentious widdly-diddly playing with a lot of overused sweep picking and arpeggio progression. It lacks a lot of the emotional substance that the early bands of the genre do. Talent does not automatically = good music, and it certainly doesn't make a band original. If you wanna talk modern death metal bands with a really creative edge, check out Portal and Psilocybe Larvae.
