When I was in high school in the mid '50s this record was probably the most requested and played over the gym's PA system at sock hops after home field football games. If a gal and guy weren't really, REALLY, close dancing when it was playing it was usually because, #1, the guy was clumsy as an ox and was stomping all over her feet, or #2, he had put his hands where they shouldn't be and she had told him to back off, or #3, she had a really big crush on some other guy and couldn't care less about the poor slob she was dancing with, and way too often that slob was me.

worked in 'ciros on the bay' west amityville l.i. in college & one of our waitresses ALWAYS had the musician play this on his accordion-it was nice to hear but this is THE version-terrific arrangement-tune has been covered by other big-bands & the 'boss',lady ga-ga,diana krall but never better than THIS!

In reply to litvak1936: Did Jonathan Schwartz really say his father wrote the lyrics in 20 minutes? It would be some claim. The lyrics are by Howard Dietz. Schwartz was the composer.

I have heard many, many "Dancing In the Dark" recordings and lots of them were marvelous, but it always comes back to this Shaw recording for me. If I am thinking about the tune, it is the Shaw that plays in my mind.I think that this arrangement was by Lennie Hayton.

Such romantic dance music. From a time when ladies acted and dressed like ladies, and gentelmen acted accordingly.

Artie`s tone is beautiful. Sounds similar to my favorite clarinet-group OK-Dreamband. CD "Clarinet-Dreams" is available for download (amazon, iTunes).
