Art Blakey was the greatest and I styled my playing style after him - he inspired me when I was 8 years old and picked up my first sticks. He still inspires me. I am 74 and in my 60th year as a professional drummer. I met and hung out with Art Blakey and Wayne Shorter when they played my home town of Montreal. It's a thrill I've never forgotten. I think the live Version from 58' (also up on youtube) is much better. This versionright here is incredibly tight, perfectly precise in every aspect. The technique and timing of everyone involved is just staggering. But if you listen to the 58' Version, you're probably like "WHAT THE HELL?????" Because that one just swings so much more, it blows me away every time.

That is ART FUCKIN BLAKEY and in this vid he's 70 years old. Playing drums is a serious sport, and I applaud every drummer who still has it at that age. Although it's quite obvious that Art at 70 was only a shadow of his former self. Just watch some performances of his from the 50's, he used to bludgeon the drumset. Still was one hard-groovin' sonovabitch here in 89'.
