There's a lot of confusion about what's Thrash Metal and what's Speed Metal because Speed Metal is a bullshit genre. Any band you can call Speed Metal would be more correctly classified as one of Heavy Metal, Thrash Metal or maybe Power Metal.

I'd say the only difference between them, if any, is that thrash is usually a little heavier. Other than that, you're right. Both genres have the same song approach and structure.
