Boston talk host Howie Carr plays the original version of the song when he talks about illegal aliens: "Everything free in America!"

Wiki (Storm aka Alan Caldwell died in '72): "They released only two singles (and one additional compilation track) during their early 1960s heyday, and none of their material made the charts. Their second and final single was a version of the West Side Story song "America", and was produced by the Beatles' manager Brian Epstein."---"Epstein also sang backing vocals on "America", and Starr added percussion and sang. Storm later asked Epstein to manage the group, but Epstein refused. The Hurricanes later recorded two songs at Abbey Road Studios in 1964: "Ubangi Stomp" and "I'll Be There", although they were never released."

Ringo entering the recording studio and singing backing vocals gets confirmed in the new book about Rory Storm, written by the Dutch journalist Tom Egbers. Better google it, 'cause I read it last week and it's an amazing book.

@viceisthename, American is by Leonard Bernstein (who did the musicfamous conductor) and by lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. The music is from an American Musical, later made into a film; (a then) modern day setting of Romeo and Juliet in New York city. See the Movie, America is a witty and is spiked with biting comments about the US. West Side Story ran for 732 performances (a successful run for the time), before going on tour.

America, America. America, that's the only thing they say in this song! I've never heard a song this bad before! Even my toes can make better music!
