"Southern Nights" by Allen Toussaint, from the album Southern Nights (1975).

Lyrics:

Southern nights

Have you ever felt a southern night?

Free as a breeze

Not to mention the trees

Whistling tunes that you know and love so

Southern nights

Just as good even when closed your eyes

I apologize to anyone who can truly say

That he has found a better way

Feel so good

Feel so good

It's frigth'ning

Wish I could,

Stop this world from fighting.

La da da da da da la da da da da da da da da

Southern skies

Have you ever noticed southern skies?

It's precious beauty lies just beyond the eye.

It goes running through your soul

Like the stories told of old

Old man

He and his dog that walked the old land

Ev'ry flower touched his cold hand

As he slowly walked by

Weeping willows

Would cry for joy

Joy

Mysteries

Like this and many others in the trees

Blow in the night

In the southern skies.

Southern nights

They feel so good it's fright'ning...

Wish I could stop this world from fighting

La da da da da da la da da da da da

To the person who said glen Campbell version was better is outta there mind! Glen Campbell couldn't tell you what a southern night was if his life depended on it. Not to mention that the cover had no where near the feeling that Allen captured!

Wow, I can hear the cicadas. So evocative, if you've been there it brings you right back.

This is the original version of this song. This is the songwriters inspiration, direct from the source. Glen Campbell's cover is just a cartoon of this. This is true soul and air of spirit.

Interesting version of "Southern Nights", as I'm only familiar with Glen Campbell's cover version (which is MILES better in my opinion). This is still decent, IMO.Bravo, Glen Campbell!

This is the beginning of side two version. The end of side one version is completely different.

Lennon is my musical hero as well and this sounds almost as if this was one of his home demos. Toussaint was a better piano player though, and that's about the only tip off that this is not Lennon. And this is a truly great song. Before now I've only heard the Glenn Campbell version, which is very good too. I've liked it since its release in 1976. But upon hearing this version performed by the actual songwriter, I have to say that I like this version the most.
