A fine performance of an old St Louis Jimmy Oden blues song by Alan Price. His outstanding piano-playing and weathered voice makes this one of the most impressing interpretations.

Alan Price recorded this song about the last farewell of a dying man in 1966. Price was then at the age of 24. Amazing how he involves himself in this sad song. Listen to the pianochords burst at the end of the song as if it were a candle flares up again and then turns off ...

James Burke "St Louis Jimmy" Oden, the composer, recorded it in 1941.

AP stills opens his show with this song most months at the Bull's Head, Barnes. It's a little different now, a bit more raucous and defiant - well it would be I suppose; He is 75! But if anything it is even better than this great old version. I hope to hear it tonight as he's back on at the aforementioned venue.

outstanding post...I had had the LP a long time ago and never forgot this fabulous song...out-of-this-world piano playing...vocal reminds me, curiously, of Peter Green "live" in the late '90s. Many thanks!
