Progressive "jazz/metal." Although that may seem strange, these guys are fucking good at it

From Aghora's Self-entitled album of 2000

with their original singer Danishta Rivero

Lyrics:

Seeing all the vanity

Rituals leaving children blind

Breeding delusive

Confusing the ancient's way of life

Seeking for their sanity

Living life with irony

It's one thing to be free from sin

And one thing to be the sin itself

Truth reveals nothing more but self

Killing all subjective holiness

Racing time ascension will take place

Granting fruits for actions made

Moving through the ageless void

Confirmed by our ignorance

Why can't we absolve our fears?

To let go and embrace our own beings.

Truth reveals nothing more but self

Killing all subjective holiness

Racing time ascension will take place

Granting fruits for actions made

To reveal the secrets

we must invoke the seeds within

conquering all our battles lifting the

awareness in man

Truth reveals nothing more but self

Killing all subjective holiness

Racing time ascension will take place

Granting fruits for actions made.

Find the part where I was aggressive. Find it. If you read my comments aggressively that's your own fault. Since Modal, Fusion, Postbop and Smooth are themselves quite far removed from the basics of jazz, it surely is a stage too far to relate the music in question to jazz just because it has links, and very tenuous ones at that, with those subgenres.

don't need to be so aggressive. most of the elements you mentioned doesn't apply in modal jazz, jazz fusion, smooth jazz and modern/contemporary jazz.

Find the part where I say that jazz ended in the 50s. Find it.

You're right, jazz metal is a total misnomer for this kind of music, and I doubt that any of the band members will call it jazz metal for that matter

So the piano is playing a broken chord based ostinato, also quite uncommon in jazz. Normally the pianist would play stabs of chords, usually focusing on outlining the colour of the chord using the 3rd and 7th tones of the chord, as opposed to the root and 5th. So the chord structure. The harmonic rhythm here is incredibly slow. Generally the chord in a standard would change at least once per bar. I could go on if you are still convinced that I should go and listen to some "actual jazz".

A walking bassline is chord tones on only the crotchet beats, so generally four per bar. The drummer and the bassist together are working to force the emphasis of the rhythm on the downbeat, beat 1. In jazz, the emphasis is very much on beats 2 and 4. In fact jazz musicians sometimes struggle playing other genres where the emphasis is different. The other band members: the singer is singing long notes, very uncommon in jazz. Normally a singer would sing the melody to a standard. (see other)

Wow, I asked a question, ready for a discussion and straight away you're in with the hate? To be expected I suppose. It's interesting that you use the term "actual jazz", when "jazz" itself is incredibly varied, from Swing and Big Band to Cool and Fusion - let alone the difference between fake and "actual" jazz. Nonetheless, the bassist is playing an ostinato on one chord, playing fast doesn't mean playing jazz. In jazz, the bassist is mostly used to playing a walking bassline. (next comment)

This doesn't deserve a reply, but let me try and educate you. Go and listen to actual jazz, and then listen to what this bassist is doing and then compare the two, oh, and the drummer.. and like everyone in this band.

what part of this makes up for the "jazz" part in "jazz metal"
