Lots of haters in the comments bitching about how the original is always the only real version, how Ellie Goulding is a blonde who does mainstream music... GET OVER YOURSELVES. She made a very decent cover, no need to bitch about it and no need to be butthurt because she's a pop singer. And to all those saying she lost the emotion in her cover, sorry but this is subjective. I for one think her version is very moving.

This video and music probably mean that this person is going through some depression because at the end, the guy drowns and dies and the water probably means the depression that caused him to commit suicide. Him fishing probably meant that he was trying to look for someone to understand what he felt inside but unfortunately he couldn't.

A fisherman, who lived for his passion. In his youth, he was able to catch the largest fish of the river with ease, his strength for the sport unmatched. Many days of bliss and joy were spent on the rivers of the forest, as he lived and experienced life. As the fisherman aged, he began to slowly loose his strength, and the life of wonder and exploration was becoming but a distant memory. Decades later, in his cabin of trophies and mementos of the life he once lived, the fisherman awakes on another grey and cold day. Then a spark. The fire of youth burning through the tinders of age. He warms a can of red bull, giving him the physical push he needs. Opening the map to the rivers of the past, he plots and remembers where the largest fish he once caught used to reside. Taking a step forward, he sets forth out into the forest. Returning to the river he once conquered, the fisherman notes how the rapids of river seem faster and more intimidating than he remembered. Wading through the rushing waters, he casts out the line once again. Snagging and gnarling at the line, the fish fights back. He hangs on, with memories of the skills of strength of youth pushing him onwards. The once calmer rivers become waves of force against his old and frail body, with the fish pulling him further into the deep. The fisherman slips, pulled under the rushing cold waters, that were once warm and calm. He refuses to let go of the fish, his old passions returning in the split seconds of his remaning life. He refuses to be beaten. A calming yet soothing darkness fades around. Then silence.As the rapids ease, and the sun returns to the forest, the river carries the fisherman's hat through the streams. A memory of a life on the waters, a memory that others will find one day. (I believe the song is simply about hanging on to times and experiences that filled us with joy, and strongly missing them in later life. When you can no longer hang on, but still have the spark of the happier times, refusing to be beaten into sadness. I believe he could of escaped, and knew the dangers, but knew that he would die reliving his happier times. He died doing something he loved. He couldn't hang on anymore, but still wanted the old passion for fishing to take him along) ...super long post.

the fisherman lost his son somehow while doing what they loved which was "fishing" and each day the father goes fishing to remember his son , but he couldnt hang on anymore. well that's what i get from this

Hearing both Versions of this song I have to say I like this one better! I heard it on my pandora and I thought they did a cover of Ellie's song but turns out it's the other way around! I like this one it just suits me more :D I like Ellie's.. But I LOVE this one! <3
