LYRICS:

I am stretched on your grave

And I'll lie there forever

If your hands were in mine

I'd be sure we'd not sever

My apple tree, my brightness,

It's time we were together

For I smell of the Earth

And I'm worn by the weather.

When my family thinks

That I'm safely in my bed

From morn until night

I am stretched at your head

Calling out to the air

With tears both hot and wild

For the loss of a girl

I loved as a child.

Do you remember the night

The night when we were lost

In the shade of the blackthorn

And the chill of the frost?

Oh, and thanks be to Jesus

We did what was right

And your maidenhead still

Is your pillar of light.

I am stretched on your grave

And I'll lie there forever

If your hands were in mine

I'd be sure we'd not sever

Oh, the priests and the friars

They approach me in dread

For I love you still

My wife, and you're dead

I still will be your shelter

Through rain and through storm

And with you in your cold grave

I cannot sleep warm

So I am stretched on your grave

And I'll lie there forever

If your hands were in mine

I'd be sure we'd not sever

My apple tree, my brightness,

It's time we were together

For I smell of the Earth

And I'm worn by the weather.

So I am stretched on your grave

And I'll lie there forever

If your hands were in mine

I'd be sure we'd not sever

just to clarify, the female vocalist on this track is almost certainly Magdalene Veen, who wrote her own harmonies. she left the band after this album was finished, and was basically erased from the band credits and never received any royalties. Veen also wrote Herr Drosselmeyer's Doll and did vocals on The Emperor's Wives and may appear on other tracks uncredited. Finn von Claret was hired as the new backup singer/dancer that year and was fantastic. It's possible that Finn also appears on this album, possibly this song (there are multiple backing vocal tracks and one may be hers).

No. Not too chipper. It's mournful in a way that reminds us we are alive and they are not. It is not sung in the traditional near monotone way, but it is still heartbreaking. This is just a little bit faster than normally preformed, though. That does take away from it. It's so beautiful.

It's not. It is a traditional Irish ballad.

My mother keeps insisting this is about Heathcliffe from Wuthering Heights.

Poor Abney park. They try so hard.

For some reason this makes me think of Davvy and Dora from David Copperfield. *Bleeds*

I like this. I've always loved Irish folk tunes, but Abney Road really catches it. :)

Thanks for posting this song; It's one of my favorites! I really love the harmony in the verse starting with "Oh, the priests and the friars approach me in dread" Also, thanks for the lyrics. Sometimes, in songs, I can't figure out what's being said until I've read it.

Yup. That's what having her maidenhead means.
