Many people identify as Jewish in many different ways. Culturally, religiously, or even ethnically. I have no idea in which way Abdominal identifies. He could be a person born to Jewish parents but has no belief in religion. Also, there are Jewish ethnic groups. Take the Ashkenazi for example.
