Considering Bonaparte's Retreat is a reel and part of the Scottish and Irish musical tradition (Presumably something to do with the number of unfortunates from these countries who fought against Boney. Not sure the same could be said for Kentuckians.), but found in the US whose fiddle traidtions are derived from those of Europe, I'm not sure claiming it as an American tune is particulalry legitimate. Neither does it explain the presence of Mackay's, "Mrs MacLeod of Raasay". I wonder how much of the musical tradition of Kentucky is specifically Scottish or Irish in origin?

Amusing to see so many comments on how American this is and even one saying it's a pity we have no music like this in Britain. The basis for Hoedown was almost entirely from the Scottish traditional repertoire, even having the Angus MacKay reel, Mrs MacLeod of Raasay, as part of the melody.
