I know it's easier to think of Master of Puppets for this list. However think about the difference between Kill Em All and Ride the Lightning, and you can see why they chose this album. This album was when Metallica decided to refine their musicianship, making more complex guitar riffs and actual melodies, adding beautiful harmonies, deeper lyrical themes, and created arguably the first true thrash metal ballad. This album would define their sound and the metal scene for decades to come.

Ride the Lighting sucked.. Justice for All was the best album they ever made

At first, it's probably easier to think that Master Of Puppets is more influential, based solely on the fact that it's heavier, but Ride The Lightning introduced guitar harmonies and acoustic/lighter parts which i think was more influential. MOP riffed more, but RTL had that sonic melody. I'm happy with either of them.

With Metallica I would have gone with Master instead of Ride for this one.

My 3rd fav album of all time. While Master is my fav album, & their masterpiece, I can see why got picked. It's certainly a Jane changer for thrash metal.

I do think that Ride the Lightning is a great album, but Kill 'Em All will forever be the greatest \m/

while RtL is a pioneering album, it definitely does exceed MoP in influence. I'm not saying that cuz it's the obvious choice I really mean it! MoP made tons of kids pick up a guitar and start learning. I am among those kids! the first song I ever learned on guitar wasn't iron man or smoke on the water, it was welcome home (sanitarium)! and MoP (along w/ RiB, AtL, and Peace Sells) brought thrash metal to forefront in the metal world, even eclipsing bands like priest and maiden!

you're talking about metallica influenced everyone even in the era of Reign in Blood Jeff Hanneman telling magazines that metallica was a source of inspiration and listened to his records, testament to talk about his influence on the genre undisputed overrated not to mention no satan or not to go a thousand miles for now on all songs influenced you say no, please think before you wrote that stupidity. you can tell that changed were sold out overvalued i can not accept that.
