And A Couple Of Tra-La-La's! Frankie Masters' "Bell Tone" arrangement gimmick is much in evidence on this happy track from "The Wizard of Oz" (not yet in theaters when this was recorded).

Disc courtesy of The Rick Colom Collection. Digitally processed from the original 78rpm: Vocalion 5034 - The Merry Old Land Of Oz (Harburg-Arlen) by Frankie Masters & his Orchestra, vocal by Frankie Masters and The Masters Voices. Recorded July 31, 1939

MusicProf78 sent me your message...Love that record too much to part with it! LOL It took me a long time to find it. I wanted a copy of the original after hearing it also on the Godfrey show and finally found one after many years of hunting. No sale! LOL "Rick's Vault" MusicProf78 did a fantastic job restoring it!

What a pleasure to finally hear a clear transfer of this tune! I have before now only had the song as heard on the Arthur Godfrey show, and it's quality left a lot to be desired! Best rendition of the tune, gotta love the vocal harmony! If you ever want to sell this record, send me a message!

I see four of Gordon's tracks currently available for listening on YouTube. I may have a couple additional tunes which I'll add to the list of possible future posts. Thanks.

Very interesting rendition of one of the least hear songs of the movie. Thanks for sharing!

Great MusicProf78! You mentioned this "arrangement gimmick," and I have a big request: Several years ago on an obscure internet channel, heard Gray Gordon and his Tick-Tock Orchestra. I LOVED IT! Like you say, he had a rhythmic "tick-tock" arrangement gimmick, or really, it was his schtick, but it was great fun, toe-tapping fun, and wondered if you might find some Gray Gordon to post. I'd appreciate it and if you hadn't heard of him, I think you'd really enjoy him, and everyone else here.

"Monkeys Have No Tails" (Abe Lyman) is also available on Youtube in a MusicProf78 post.

This recording was featured by Arthur Godfrey on his 9-21-39 morning radio show on WJSV Washington (which became WTOP). Godfrey says that Frankie Masters had just sent him this "new" record" to play on his show. The complete broadcast day of WJSV was recorded by, I think, the Library of Congress, and is available for purchase on the internet. It's a very interesting piece of Americana. Godfrey also plays "Monkeys Have No Tails in Pago Pago" on the show.
