It is highly debatable to what extent do people understand the depth of Zakir ji's tabla. Ustad Zakir Hussain'a aura mainly comprises of two distinct parts: there is definitely a part which is full of pomp and glamour, and, a part which is extremely difficult to comprehend which is replete with complex mathematical calculations and deep sense of layakari. Infact he is the greatest layadaar ever and a master of playing outside the beats. Seemingly complex rhythmic patterns based on 3/4, 1/4 and 1/2 cycles emanate flamboyantly from his hand. Forget common audience, even educated tabla players don't find it easy to count the rhythmic patterns that he demonstrates off and on and that is where is hallmark lies. Without any shade of doubt he is one of the greatest tabla masters of 21st century and this endorsement doesn't come from the masses but from the other great tabla masters like Pandit anindo-ji, Ustad Afaq hussain, Ustad Shafaat ahmed khan, Bikram ghosh, Subhankar Banerjee, Pandit Nayan Ghosh, Subhankar Banerjee, Abhijeet Banerjee, Akram Khan, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Pandit Jasraj, Pandit Sankha Chatterjee to name a few.

Totally right, this is certainly not Bhairav, possibly Bhairavi but more of a subdued Bhairavi rather than a full depiction of the raag.

I wonder why no one noticed that the lehra is not in Bhairav raga.. This is Bhairavi perhaps... but not Bhairav at all.. not even the slightest... There are also chances that this raga can be Bilaskhani Todi, simlar to bhairavi..!!

@srguy My friend i am not questioning the genius of Zakirji. But from your comment it seems that one who has got the glamour surrounding him is the greatest( you have judged Zakirji more in this way than commenting about his playing) which is not true everytime. There are many musicains who didn't gain that much fame as some people but they may be playing better than the famed musicians. It can be a case even with Zakirji!!! Sorry if i said anything wrong but i felt the need to correct you.

@TheMrTabla Oh, OK, so please list other tabla players, like Zakir, who have played with as many musicians, of all styles, and have been as honored, with awards and recognition from many, many musical societies and foundations, throughout their lives. Sorry, but as I see/hear it, he still is in a class by himself, and deservedly so.

@srguy You must read carefully that i have written that bayan in "this recording only"(while playing drut teental variation this i didn't mention for which i apologize) is ordinary. But your comment that no one can come close to him is wrong and u can ask any knowledgeable person who doesn't fear of what he is saying in public may it be truth.He will say that the drut teental pat is ordinary which is good for listening and can enhance the artist's mood.
