This beautiful song was featured in the movie, The Thomas Crown Affair (1968). Michel Legrand, the prolific French musical composer, arranger, conductor and pianist received his first Academy Award for composing this song.

It is an absolutely haunting song which reflects a sort of rêverie into the mysteries of failed relationships - the metaphor of the windmills and the endless circles implies the constant nature of this type of personal dilemma.
