I listen to Warren every day, not a day goes by that I dont listen to one of his works. Was fortunqte to have grown up during his era and lived with his music in my life since the 70's. His music is immortal.

I pulled an all nighter before a music history test and discovered this guy, lots of weed. I mean it's rock but it turned him into one of my favorite musicians. I watched tv recently and there was the quote "Half the people who come through here can't play their fucking instruments Warren Zevon could talk 12 tone theory with..uh Stravinsky". I don't know if he knew 12 tone honestly but he suspends the V chord V64-53 (jumped out interfered with studying). Dude knew his stuff but he gives you your steak and potatoes too. One of rock's best we don't hear on the radio too much.

There lived a wise man in ancient Greece whose name was Diogenes. Men came from all parts of the land to see him and talk to him. Diogenes was a strange man. He said that no man needed much, and so he did not live in a house but slept in a barrel, which he rolled about from place to place.

You can tell the good stuff when you scroll down the comments section and want to talk to everybody. Its when youtube, communism, and other stuff feel nice.

I love Warren's writing, but the best version I've heard of this song is by Madeleine Peyroux on her album "The Blue Room." There's also a live studio version of it by her that's worth checking out on youtube. Very sparse musically and understated vocally. I lived in LA for 23 years and her recording of this song evokes the emptiness, the futility, and the delusion that is LA.

I was born in 1977 and I can safely say that few if, none of my friends know or appreciate Warren like I do. My father introduced me to him as a child. His music has always been, and will always be a go-to for me. I'm saddened that we can never experience more beautiful music from him, but grateful we are blessed with the musical wonders he left us.

Personally,as an older poster, and being Danish, I like Emmelie. It is a bit of American/gospel and Euro.

Does anyone know if the classical introduction is an original composition or a sample from a larger piece?

Yes, Warren Zevon was a musical and literary genius. But what would he say to all these accolades? Do we understand what he was singing and writing about? For instance: do we realize that Desperadoes, while obviously an attempt at coming to terms with his own alcoholic tendencies, was also his lamentation about the decline and inevitable end of western civilization? Listen to it again and see for yourself. If we are going to talk about Zevon, then let's really talk.
