when i was a younger man, i was asked by Stevie Vaughn (his name at the time and pre- Ray fame) to come over to his house to jam. so i went over. we jammed for a while and he stopped me to say that i was a terrible bass player and i needed to listen to this guy. this guy was Willie Weeks and this solo. so I did, over and over and over never quite got it until later. but the main thing was it forced me to be aware that there were much better bass players than i thought i was and i needed to practice. A SECRET...WW plays with Eric Clapton, George Harrison, etc. because he sets the groove, not because he plays this or any solo. By the way, this dude (Marlowe) nails it. thanks

You did an amazing job on that! Great work. But I'm wondering what is really the big deal about this Weeks guy? Sure this album is great, and he's got an extensive list of touring credits and played with some amazing artists, but I can't find ANYTHING else that he recorded that's even worth mentioning. He played on the worst George Harrison albums, he played on great albums by Stevie Wonder, John Mayer, etc., but every single time, he's credit with one deep album cut that's a throwaway track. No disrespect about the Hathaway Live album, it's great stuff - but talk about an unbelievably over-rated player skating on the reputation of ONE live album from 40 years ago!

Always impressive Marlowe! My bass instructor shared that Prince used that solo to test his new bassists. He also shared that it's more difficult to keep the groove when playing slowly and this the perfect solo to showcase one's smooth, groove skills. You nailed it!!!

You know he is thinking, fuck. Willie came up with this on the spot. Still that said you are amazing I wish I could play my bass 1/16 of what you do.

I love this Willie Weeks so much....This is one of my favorites, along with the bassline for Louis Johnson's "Get the Funky out of my face" and James Browns's "soul power"! Apparently, you are passionate about the bass. You educated me and everything you do is very much appreciated. Have a wonderful day in the UK, my friend.

GREAT JOB, DUDE! At first I was thinking "Here we go again..." but you nailed it! Every serious bass player should study the "less flashy and therefore often overlooked" guys like Willie Weeks, Jamerson, Jerry Jemott, Paul Jackson, Nathan Watts, Verdine White etc. - I like me some Jaco too, but I have heard more half assed renditions of "Teen Town" than could fit in a Terabyte HD..... :)

Man you really smoked this bass solo. You really are a talented cat. I watch all of your postings. Could you please post the funk bassline to Paradise by the group Change. I would greatly appreciate seeing you funk it up and would like to see how it's done. Keep on keepin' on dude.

@bassplayalong Hey, great bass playing!! How long did it take you to learn this by ear? Thinking about taking a shot at it myself.

How many times do you listen to the track to memorize solos?
