What I remember of my VH 1981 concert when I was 17. Drank hot JD with a flat warm Coke that we passed around. Got there. The lights came on and it got really loud. A blast of blue Columbian Gold smoke hit me so hard it parted my hair. Dave did something with swords and more lights. The music stopped, the lights came on. Then I remember a cop telling me I could not sleep on the concrete in the parking lot. The end.

Ahh. I just watched some of the Kimmel show stuff and this is a welcome relief. This and Hear 'Bout It Later are my favorites. I never saw them live back then and never want to see this awful Pet Sematary version of them either.

Me thinks this was overdubbed, if you look at Anthony's fingers at around 1:55, they do not match what is coming out my speakers! I am guessing the kept some of the vocals and drums, and overdubbed the rest.

Remember, Van Halen worked their bloody ass off to make it. In fact, some of you may or may not know that Gene Simmons heard them (this is before Warners offered Van Halen a record deal) and flew them to New York and paid for it to try and get them a record deal and they were turned down! Can you believe the idiocy of the record companies? Van Halen of course were discouraged, but they put their nose to the grindstone and kept gigging wherever they could until Milton Berle's nephew stepped into the picture. The story is he brought Mo Ostin, who was the head of Warners' at the time along with I believe it was the producer Ted Templeman to hear the band. They were offered a contract on the spot. There is an interesting VH documentary where this info came from, but I can't remember the name of it. If you're interested, I'm sure you'll find it.

I saw them in Oakland on the June 11th show but all the footage I've seen has been from the 12th. They're wearing the same outfits that they did on the 11th, probably for continuity's sake. Does anyone know if all three shows were filmed?

Like Dave said recently- Van Halen is like a shot of whiskey. Straight up hard rock. However, there is subtlety if you listen to Ed's playing here. Nice jazzy riffs and fills in Daves talking moments. Great rhythm playing. Dave's voice is great here- booming and hitting the high points- but it's Mikes backing vocals that define their sound here. A Beach Boys tunefulness that takes it to another level sonically. Throw in Alexs manic drums and eddies wildly schizophrenicly entertaining solos and you have aband as unique as Zeppelin, the stones, who or anybody else. A unique Anerican sound that defined an era.

I saw them in 1978 Tower Theatre Phila, Pa. Opened up for JOURNEY. No one ever heard of either band at the time.

they were clicking that night, the entire band brought it to life. I saw this tour, my first concert ever in Kansas City... it was truly epic with the walls, mountains of speakers look. A spectacular event.
