Beautiful, heartbreaking vocal on top of Bill's classic impressionist masterpiece. If you have kids, especially a daughter, this is quite bittersweet. Upload mp3 @ http://www.mp32tube.com

WestSideOfJazzMany think that it was the explosion of rock and roll, and the resulting dismissal - rightly or wrongly - of artists like Tony Bennett that actually led to one of the incredible duo pairings in jazz history - Tony Bennett and Bill Evans. Waltz for Debby is one of my favorite Evans tunes, and Bennett gives his own spin to the textured tone poem.

A voice and a piano. Simple. It works. What happened?

not simple doesn't really mean not easy. scales are also very difficult to sing. the melody in terms of music theory, the falling scale over circle of fifths, is somewhat simple, or at least is written to sound that way, influenced by debussy's arabesque if i had to guess.

simple melody huh? Do you sing? Try it. Then try it in front of an audience. You don't hear this song done live, because it's not a walk in the park. Of course a GOOD singer makes it seem easy.

Thank you for that wise tribute to the passing of the baton. My own daughter is on the cusp of saying goodby to her childhood.

Tony's own 'Antonia' a similar heartstring jerker an ode to the loss of our little girls and their innocence. We DO mourn the loss - but the bittersweetness of that loss is quite natural and they grow up to be (hopefully) fabulous women of this world who then have their OWN little girls (our grandchildren) and the saga repeats itself! That is what we hope and pray for....Yes - cherish the moment and don't let it pass unacknowledged as precious for we will not pass this way again.......
