I can close my eyes and hear my daddy singing this song. He was no Tom T. Hall but he was pretty damn good. He had a 1952 J45 that he bought in the summer of 53 for 5 bucks... Long story. Anyway, I have the old guitar now and I can play it, but not like the old man could.

A better song writer never existed. I love everything Tom T. ever sang. Homecoming is my all time favorite. Whenever I would have writers block when writing my book, all I had to do was listen to these words, they tell a true story of the way country music really was. Tom T. wrote the "forward" for my book, What a great story teller you are as well as song writer. No one will ever fill your shoes. (Maxine Brown)

This song is in class of its own - we can argue about which is the best C&W song - but none comes close to this for its individuality and story - and yes - between the lines story and pathos. Reminds me of of my youth - returning home to see my Dad in between rambles.
