I saw The New Cars in Dallas, on the Road Rage tour with Blondie. Blondie were in fine form (you haven't heard "One Way or Another" 'til you've heard it live) and The New Cars were pure fun. They didn't seem to mind that we were there to hear all the classic Ocasek-written songs (plus a handful of Todd's best tunes.) Watching them all play ukeleles on "Bang the Drum All Day" was unforgettable. Kasim Sulton sang a note-perfect "All Mixed Up", and Greg reprised his classic sax solo! GREAT show.

The New Cars might've worked better if Todd didn't sing every song in super-slow motion. I feel like he dragged out every. single. line. of every song...it's like pick up the pace already! Todd is an amazing musician but I prefer his voice in songs like "Can We Still Be Friends" over stuff like this. I also just hated the name "The New Cars". I felt like that made it harder to disassociate the old from the new. I know it's just a name, but still...all in all, close but no cigar.

The first Cars album was sheer brilliance, and the group never matched it after that. Todd Rundgren is one of the most skilled musicians of his time. Thanks for posting this great video.

I was never a big fan of the Cars (but have always been of Todds.) I did however always love this original song & feel the new band did a decent job on it (although the New Cars with Todd always left me a bit cold.) Nice thing about that whole NEW CARS thing was that Greg Hawkes teamed up with Todd & has been backing him up on keyboards while he's been out doing his own stuff. No Roger Powell, but he still fits in quite nicely IMHO!
