"Up the Ladder to the Roof" is a 1970 hit single recorded by The Supremes for the Motown label. It was the first Supremes single to feature new lead singer Jean Terrell in place of Diana Ross, who officially left the group for a solo career two weeks before the recording of this song in January 1970.

Wah-wah guitar played by Melvin Ragin (1951), better known as "Wah-Wah Watson" (http://www.wahwah.com).

Come with me

And we shall run across the sky

And illuminate the night

O-h-h-h, I will try and guide you

To better times and brighter days

Don't be afraid...

Come up the ladder to the roof

Where we can see heaven much better

Come up the ladder to the roof

Where we can be (where we can be) mmm...

(where we can be)...closer to heaven

(To heaven-stay)

Stay with me

And we shall let expression

("sing")

Can't you hear 'em ring

Ooh

(Memories of yesterday)

Yesterday's broken dreams

Dont you know, they'll all fade away

If you'll come...

Up the ladder to the roof

Where we can see heaven much better

Come up the ladder to the roof

Where we can be

[Mary:] (where we can be)

[Cindy:] (where we can be)

Aahh... closer to heaven

We'll laugh and I tell you the story of love-how it is-and the

Happiness in it baby

We'll combine our thoughts

And together we'll travel the roads to the fountain of lovliness

I will never ever ever leave you leave you alone to wonder

As we go on our love it will grow much stronger and stronger

Don't you wanna go...

Up the ladder to the roof

Where we can see heaven much better

Up the ladder where we can be closer to heaven

Aah

Up the...

(up the)

Ooh hoo

Up the

(up the)

Ooh come on and walk

Come on and talk

Come on and sing about love and understanding

"Up the Ladder to the Roof" is een hitsingle van de Amerikaanse meidengroep The Supremes.

It grinds my gears when people keep comparing 'Ross' to these ladies, Diana Ross had no soul, no movement and not a particularly good voice and if she hadn't have been Gordy's 'sex toy' she wouldn't even have made The Supremes.... Jean Terrell, Cindy Birdsong and Mary Wilson = Supreme!

This song easily proved that The Supremes didn't need Diana Ross any more than she needed them.

And,by the way, Jean Terrell's voice resembles Diana's, but less nasal and a clearer, more bell-like tone. And her vocal range is (I hadn't noticed before) wider than Diana's.(You did know she is the sister of Ernie Terrell, the heavyweight box champion, yes?)

I was reading Billboards "Top Pop Singles, 1955-2002" and was looking at the all the Supremes' songs and saw this one. Hadn't heard it in 30 years. This is, on this hearing of it, one of the first times Cindy and Mary are not in the background. Their voices are clearer than on ANY single with the Supremes (64-67) or Diana Ross and The Supremes. Very striking how much like a "group" they sound instead of a lead singer and backup singers.

God. Thank you for this. People simply do not know.

Clearly one of their best...easy to relate to the lyrics...especially at the time it was released...February, 1970...very tumultuous times, on many fronts...perhaps they allowed us to "see Heaven much better"....
