Ray Davies was a PROLIFIC writer, brilliant and such a talented guy. There are so many familiar hit tunes down the years.

@Sukkii25 all you have to do is go through their catalog and you'll see your comment is wrong he had an awesome team and he is in that group with the rest of them Genius Songwriter frontman singer musician along with the rest it is a shame they hate each other but look at the Gallager brothers, the Robinson Bros great Musicians, Great Bands, Brotherly Hate creates great music

@Dukegrievousangel Lyrics are only part of the song. Comparing the Beatles and the Kinks is apples and oranges. Different messages; Ray Davies was more in tune with the day to day absurdities in life, while the Beatles, in particular George, invoked awareness of a much bigger picture. And the Kinks couldn't come close to the melodies the Beatles created.

@awotter Well, thanks for justifying your opinion with some sort of logical argument rather than just resorting to name-calling. Oh wait. Nevermind.

Lyrics just as true today.

I'm sorry, not to take anything away from the reverberations the Beatles started in '60s rock and roll/pop music (even if I'm not a very big fan of theirs), but to put Lennon/McCartney as songwriters on par with Ray Davies just doesn't compute. Which Beatles song lyrics have the gravity of "Dead End Street", or the humorous social truths found in this tune? Ray was one of the few '60s songwriters to point out the superficiality of the mod/hippie movements and he wasn't wrong!

I've always had art teachers that reminded me of Ray Davies, but never completely. I'm still hanging on for that. I would love government funded art classes if that happened.

@merelyapparent Yes, I must say I do agree with you. It is hard to say who´s best at something. Specially in topics which are subjective. Well, then I will say that Ray Davis is the one that I LOVE BEST That might be more like it.

That's not The Kinks, it's Ray Davies and a bunch of blokes.
