Charted at #12 on Billboard Hot 100 in April 1958. With the Billy Vaughn Orchestra. Original Billboard review: "This is the strongest by the trio in awhile. It's a cover of the Art and Dotty Todd version on Era. The contagious theme with a catchy lyric phrase is handled well by the girls. This could step out."

Other charting versions: #6 on the Hot 100 for Art and Dotty Todd in April 1958 (#9 R&B), #112 for the Lettermen in November 1966 (#8 Adult Contemporary), #28 Adult Contemporary for the Gunter Kallmann Chorus in 1967 and #16 Adult Contemporary for the Manhattan Transfer in February 1977 (#1 UK).

Written by Wayne Shanklin.

B-side is "Cocanut Grove".

I discovered this song from the episode 'The Pop Star' of Are You Being Served. The performance by Bert Spooner aka Mike Berry was great with others as well in the studio-the very last scene of the episode.

Great arrangement and a hit for this trio, but Art & Dottie Todd's version really sticks out in my mind.

Charming! It became a hit again, re-recorded in the 70s, by Manhattan Transfer. Thanks for posting...

Wayne Shanklin was the very talented husband of the very talented Toni Fisher, who he also produced. I vaguely remember Art and Dotty Todd were a big act in Hawaii.

I thought that Manhattan Transfer did the first version of this song. Oh well.

"Chanson d'Amour" i French for "song of love." "ra-ta-dah-da-dah" is French for -- well, you can use your imagination.

A young 64 year old woman emailed saying a song had been going through her mind and asked for my help. She said, "I think it was from the 50's and I believe it was in French. Something about a'more then "rat a tat a tat. It's driving me crazy! I know you know it!!" I did know it and came right here to email it to her. I've danced many a dance at the country club to this beautiful record. High school days.

Not sure I'm entirely happy about this treatment; not much of a 'Song of love' with all the nuances inherent in the title ; it was originally a 'pure' ballad and I think derived from the Edith Piaf version of many years ago. But thanks for making it available......
