Swing from Berlin (25) Will Glahe - Sing Nachtigall Sing (1941) & Berlin , summer 1945 video free download
Michael Jary composed the melancholic "Sing, Nachtigall sing" for the movie "Auf Wiedersehen, Franziska", directed by the talented Helmut Käutner in 1941. In the movie, which starred Marianne Hoppe and Hans Söhnker, it is heard as background music being played on a gramophone.
The best known and - in my opinion best - recorded version is the one by Evelyn Künneke, recorded in 1943. This recording by Will Glahé and his orchestra was made earlier in 1941. The sound is very different from Künneke's and has an exotic feel to it (which is the way the song is heard in the movie).
The vocalists are not credited and it is clearly not the popular Schuricke-Terzett. If anyone has any ideas who they are, feel free to leave your comments.
About the video :
I made 2 videos for this song - one which has the movie and its stars as its theme and one with images of Berlin in the summer of 1945. I found the second video the more powerful - considering the song's lyrics (in translation : Sing nightingale sing, a song of days long gone - Sing nightingale sing touch my weary heart etc.)

Ich muss mich korrigieren, hatte es nicht mehr richtig in Erinnerung. Es singen Robert Biberti, Erwin Sachse-Steuernagel und Egon Vogel, welche als Besetzung für das Meistersextett vorgesehen waren. My grandmother was alone with her sister and neighbors when Berlin fell. She described the noise from the bombs as the most horrendous ever. On her diary she wrote "When the bombs stopped the silence was even more frightening. Die angesprochene Aufnahme auf POLYDOR ist eine Aufnahme von der Firma TEMPO! Wie die Aufnahme bei Polydor gelandet ist, vermag ich überhaupt nicht nachzuvollziehen. Diese Tempoaufnahme erschien seltsamerweise auch ganz regulär auf Tempo, es spielt Orchester Bernhard Ette und es singt Kurt Reichherzer. (ca.1943)14 years ago

Ich habe auch noch eine Aufnahme auf Polydor (dunkelrotes Label). Es soll sich dabei laut Etikett um Horst Winter handeln (umseitig "Lass dein Herz bei mir zurück"), die Stimme klingt allerdings ganz anders. Die Platte hat auch kein mechanisches Copyright Datum wie üblich. Ich weiss nicht ob es eine Aufnahme aus der Kriegszeit oder eine Nachkriegsaufnahme ist... Allerdings ist das Arrangement sehr enttäuschend...14 years ago
