The tune of this song was originally composed as a clarinet piece by Acker Bilk for his daughter Jenny. Subsequently, it became the theme tune for a BBC TV drama series also named as "Stranger on the Shore", first released in 1961, and became the best-selling instrumental single in 1962 in the U.K. Then later in 1962, songwriter and music publisher Robert Mellin wrote lyrics for the instrumental piece, allowing it to be covered by singers like Andy Williams and the Drifters. Thereafter, Kenny G made a saxophone smooth jazz adaptation of the song.
