I keep coming back to this song again and again. Steve Earles history with drugs and addiction doesn't surprise me at all, his level of empathy is mind blowing and that must hurt him like hell, how many artists can do this? This is the pinnacle of singer songwriting talent, the story telling, the sensitivity, the empathy, the hidden nuances. What made him even think to do this? His managed to pull a story out of all the biase and fear and make it personal to his subject not just a load of white noise about preconceived notions.

John Walker Lynd was a fool of a kid, from a very dysfunctional family who allowed their minor child to travel alone to an Arab country...just because he wanted to, to study Arabic. He pretended to be an African-American on the internet, he could not did not want to accept who he was and so created a false personna which he did his best to translate into the real world.He knew nothing about anything and got himself into a heap of a mess and legal trouble, and there he sits now in jail, probably just as confused and dysfunctional as he ever was. Shame on his parents for allowing their own dysfunction to ruin their son's life.

Hitler was also a creationist who rejected hard scientific facts like evolution. Like most religious zealots, he used the science he liked to further his own goals and rejected that which contradicted his worldview. That doesn't make science evil - it is a tool just like a gun or a hammer. The Nazis' hatred and persecution of the Jews (and ultimately, the holocaust) was rooted in over a thousand years of Christian anti-semitism in Germany and Europe.
