On this day in 1964 {May 10th} Dusty Springfield performed "I Only Want to Be With You" on the CBS-TV program 'The Ed Sullivan Show’; it also marked her U.S. television debut...This was her debut record on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; and little over two months earlier on March 8th, 1964 it peaked at #12 {for 1 week} and it spent 10 weeks on the Top 100...On the same 'Sullivan' show she also performed "Stay Awhile"; the day before it was at #38 and that was its last day on the Top 100, and position #38 was also its peak position on the Top 100...Between 1964 and 1970 she, as a solo artist, had eighteen Top 100 records; with three making the Top 10, "Wishin' and Hopin'" {#6 in 1964}, "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" {#4 in 1966}, and "Son-of-a-Preacher Man" {#10 in 1969}...In 1988 on February 14th, in a duet with the Pet Shop Boys, she peaked at #2 {for 2 weeks} with "What Have I Done to Deserve This?"; it was kept out of the top spot by "Seasons Change" by Expose and "Father Figure" by George Michael...Sadly, Ms. Springsfield, born Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien, passed away on March 2nd, 1999 at the young age of 59...May she R.I.P.

Dusty Springfield was one of a kind. Loved her then, love her still. No one has ever done it better.

The drumming in this is fantastic. I read somewhere that when the Motown Revue came to Britain in the 60's John Lennon asked some of them at a party, "What does the drummer on your records use as sticks, tree trunks?" I reckon the drummer on this could give Benny Benjamin a run for his money in the skin whacking stakes. BTW I just researched and found out that the drummer on this was the legendary Bobby Graham. Should've known.

Love this! Some of my earliest memories are of being driven around by my dad and for years the only tape in the car was Dusty Springfield.

How funny you should say "Panda Eyes". We used to call her "Ol' Black Eyes".

I remember this one as her follow-up to " I only wanna be with You." What a catchy and great sound - miss you, Dusty!

I agree and it reminds me a lot of Phil Spector's productions for the Ronnettes and the Crystals.

This song personifies the sound of the 60's.

many have mentioned drummer Bobby Graham, Britain's most recognised session drummer. He also backed visiting American artists. Gene Pitney was apparently a bit concerned his own drummer wasn't on tour but was more than relieved when he heard Bobby on the sticks. He drummed on the "Them" hits, Van Morrison's band. He died 2 years ago but check out his site "bobbygraham.co.uk"

The greatest Phil Spector-song that Phil Spector never wrote together with Wizzard - See my baby jive

One of my favorites from Dusty. I read in several places that she hated this song!

Like so many other songs, why don't we hear this on the "oldies" stations?

@samjtwinn There is a musical production of her life story featuring over 40 of her hit songs. It is fabulous. Super-duper show. My mum is in it at the moment. The most brilliant show I think I've ever seen, and I've seen over 200 shows, so that says a lot.

@samjtwinn They have made a musical. My mum is in it. It has all of DUsty's hit songs and it is like the story of her life. It is positively BRILLIANT!! If you can find a production on, go see it. It is like a drug for all Dusty fans. So if you can, go see a production.
